Roll-Formed Pallet Racking is by far the most common form of racking seen in average warehouses, distribution and production facilities. Roll-Form refers to the process in which to manufacture the Rack Frames and Beams. A thin flat coil of steel is heated and shaped until engineer specifications are met. The cost for a roll-formed rack system is much less than that of a structural rack system but on the other hand roll-formed racking is also limited in weight and height requirement capabilities.
Typical applications for roll-formed pallet racking are limited to mostly single selective or double deep storage applications.
Structural racking is not for every application – but you tend to see structural racking in the largest distribution centers worldwide. Structural rack components consist of solid steel I-beam and C-channel designs. A structural pallet rack system will allow you to store heavier material and the ability to go taller in buildings with greater clear height.
Structural racking also allows you to you incorporate multiple types of storage mediums into one system (i.e. single selective, push-back, drive in, pallet flow).
Structural racking will stand up to forklift abuse while Roll-Formed rack tends to damage quite easily upon impact. Some Structural Rack manufacturers will even offer 2 Year + Warranties on their product.
It is recommended to speak with a Material Handling Specialist to determine if Roll Formed or Structural Steel Racking is appropriate for your application.
